D4614 - "Futa-Ai" Selvedge Jacket - Type I

D4614 - "Futa-Ai" Selvedge Jacket - Type I

The Studio D'Artisan D4614 Futa-Ai Selvedge Type I Jacket carries one of the most historically significant dye combinations in Japanese textile tradition. Futa-Ai, literally meaning two indigos, blends Tokushima natural indigo with madder root in a layered dyeing process that dates to the Heian period, where the resulting purple-toned hue was reserved exclusively for the aristocracy as a mark of refinement and status. On denim, that centuries-old color lands as something genuinely unlike anything in the conventional range, shifting between indigo depth and the warm, earthy richness of madder depending on the light. The warp and weft are both constructed from textured 6-count slub yarns, giving the 16oz fabric a rugged surface and pronounced vertical rain streaking that defines naturally dyed cloth at this weight. Woven on vintage power looms in Ibara, Okayama Prefecture, one of Japan's most storied denim-producing regions. The jacket itself is a faithful reproduction of mid-1930s Type I workwear, short and boxy with wide sleeves that sit higher on the body, proportioned to pair naturally with a high-rise trouser for a balanced, period-correct silhouette.
